From Then to Now: The Evolution of Old Navy Matching PJs

Tis’ the year of 2016. Truly a superior year. I had just graduated high school, anxiously awaiting my college years, the music was bumpin, and oh yeah Old Navy changed the game by launching matching family PJS.

According to Southern Living - As early as the '50s, holiday department store catalogs would advertise festive getups adorned with stripes, checks, and other holiday motifs for the whole family. The trend inevitably took off, sticking around steadily through the '60s, '70s, and '80s.

Pajamas have changed drastically since then thanks to the grasp social media has. We now want to don our ugly sweaters, funny, cute or cozy PJS to others. We want that “I have my $hit together look” to share.

Old Navy heard that siren call and introduced “Jiggle Jammies” in 16’. The started with only TWO designs: one dog print and one buffalo check print. Since then it has expanded year after year exciting us with new prints and patterns.

Gap Inc. Online Blog post says:

Between Halloween and New Year’s Eve in 2020, Old Navy sold nearly 20 million pairs of Jingle Jammies in-stores and online!

• To give an idea of scale, that’s:

  • 222 pairs sold every minute.

  • Enough to outfit the entire Bay Area with at least two pairs of Jingle Jammies for each person!

  • Enough to fill Oracle Park, Chase Center, Yankee Stadium and MetLife Stadium combined with more than 87 pairs for each seat! 

Now in 2025 many families have since adopted the yearly tradition of finding the newest seasons styles with plenty of sizes available. My personal favorite of Old Navy’s PJs is that you can mix and match the type of PJS but still have the same print. For example: Mom can wear a two piece flannel set in a candy cane print, but the daughter prefers the waffle knit short version. No worries both come in the candy cane print!

However it’s never too late to add matching PJS into your family tradition. Some prints are even available for your furry friends;).
